I’m not the first person to tell you this, I’m sure, but your job could be negatively affecting your health. I was recently reading a blog post on Glamour and learned that if you work more than 8 hours a day (hello, that’s just about all of us), you’re as much as 80% more at risk for heart disease.
But don’t ditch the 9-to-5 just yet — no matter how many hours you work, if you’re stressed out, you’re at greater risk for a whole slew of health issues: heart attack, obesity, stroke, sleep problems, digestive issues and depression. Sitting at a desk? That’s bad, too. Inactivity can cause your metabolism to get all kinds of screwed up. An eight-hour seated work day means your risk of death is 15% greater than if you only sat for four.
So now what? Chances are, you aren’t going to quit your desk job. It’s important to note that the study mentioned in Glamour cited three big problem areas: high stress, high blood pressure, and unhealthy diets. So if you can work to manage those things, you can create a healthier workplace for yourself. Get up and move often throughout the day, pack healthy snacks and maybe even practice some meditative breathing to de-stress throughout the day. It could literally extend your lifespan!
